VIDEO SCULPTURE

Dancing with Alexa

Assignment:
Brainstorm an augmented reality video sculpture.

Concept:
After volunteering to be 3D scanned in class, my virtual mini-me came to life. Freed from the limitations of my physical body, she attempts dance movements I can no longer perform. The project explores the space between the human body and its digital double through augmented reality choreography.

Dance becomes a site of translation between realities. While I identify as a Latin dancer, breakdancing exists outside my physical possibilities. In this virtual space, however, those limits dissolve. I invited two digital companions, Lola and the Explorer, to share this stage and follow my lead.

Characters:

  • Melissa – Temperamental, resistant to sudden changes.

  • Alexa (Mini-me) – Curious and daring, drawn to unfamiliar and challenging movement.

  • Lola – Playful and expressive, laughing through each moment of the performance.

​Movement:
Alexa and her companions rehearse Cumbia as a collective ritual. Through repetition and many iterations of the animation, their movements and rhythms are synchronized in preparation for the final performance.

The Big Show:
Alexa and her companions are prepared to perform on the augmented stage—a psychedelic and vibrant landscape that serves as a visual trigger. In this setting, color, rhythm, and motion blend together, creating a hybrid stage where choreography transcends the limitations of the human body. 

Dancing with Alexa uses augmented reality to explore the relationship between the physical self and its digital double. Through choreography design, scanning, and animation, the project transforms dance into a virtual space that expands movement, identity, and creative possibility.​
