        Alexandra is determined to provoke discussions about the societal stigma surrounding women in widowhood. Lopez’s interactive installations deliberate her identity as a Latina widow in the US and expose the wounds and secondary losses that form at the intersection of widowhood, gender, race, and socioeconomic status. Her work is a personal reconciliation with her unexpected role and the newfound realities that came with it.

            In her sculptural environments, Alexandra fuses textile art, craft, poetry, and technology with human interactions to bridge the frayed synapses of her reality. Her master’s thesis, “Widow,” is an interactive textile sculpture that embodies her experiences and exposes the wounds and secondary losses that form at the intersection of widowhood, gender, race, and socioeconomic status.

        She delivers spaces that her audience could appropriate to inspire action leading to a broader community that will reconcile, prioritize, and support widows in their communities. The self-reflective narrative of her speculative sculptures urges the public to understand the societal problems and unrecognized needs of widowed women in our patriarchal society.
